Tips and tricks to get the little ones reaching for more of the good stuff.

Produce Takes A Plunge

Sometimes even the most veggie-phobic kids will happily go for the green when there’s something to dip it into. Try ranch dressing, hummus, salsa or this easy and delicious Italian Dipping Sauce.

Small Sous Chefs

Giving children the chance to help prepare food can go a long way toward enticing them to eat new things—including vegetables. Turn kitchen work into playtime by enlisting them to do simple tasks like washing lettuce or snapping the ends off green beans.

A Radish By Any Other Name

A simple trick that works for some is to assign fun new names to veggies. For example, broccoli becomes much more kid-friendly when the spears are called “trees”, or when you dub whole mushrooms “little umbrellas.”

Masterpiece In Peas

Encouraging kids to use their creativity is another great way to get them crunching on veggies in no time. Try offering a platter of raw red and yellow pepper strips, grape tomatoes, carrots and other colorful favorites—challenging them to “build” a piece of art on their plates. This also works great for topping personal-sized Garden Vegetable Pizzas.

Undercover Carrots

Another easy trick is to (secretly, of course) add shredded zucchini, carrots or other veggies to your child’s favorite Prego Italian sauce and pour it over wagon wheels or other fun pasta shapes. Also, remember that each ½ cup of Prego Italian sauce contains a full serving of vegetables on its own!

Guidelines for Eating Right

Vegetables make up an important part of MyPyramid, a tool created by the USDA to help consumers make smart choices from every food group.

When it comes to vegetables, it’s a good idea to eat a variety from each of the following subgroups:

Dark green vegetables like broccoli, spinach, kale and romaine lettuce.
Orange vegetables like carrots, sweet potatoes and pumpkin.
Starchy vegetables like corn and potatoes.
Dry beans and peas like black beans, lentils and chickpeas.
Other vegetables like celery, eggplant, cucumbers and tomatoes.

MyPyramid recommends eating 2 ½ cups of vegetables each day, for those needing a 2,000-calorie diet. All Prego Italian sauces provide over 20% of the daily recommended amount for vegetables in every ½ cup serving.
